The client is one of the largest state public power corporations operating multiple generating facilities with more than 1000 circuit miles of transmission lines. To enable sustainable growth, optimize plant load factor and improve decision-making on an operational and strategic level, management requires insights on budgeted and forecasted productivity compared to actual pactual productivity with respect to all generating facilities.
What were their challenges?
The client was using SAP Business Planning and Simulations (BPS) for its annual budget process since 2004. The operations over the years had significantly grown increasing transaction volume by multiple folds. This created latency in existing data integration infrastructure that was riddled with inefficient attributes causing delays of more than 24 hours in batch cycle uploads.
In addition, the budget administration team as well as end users were crippled with an old user interface on the existing system. Due to this, a typical budgeting cycle of collecting data from end users and running allocation schemes was error prone leading to long consolidation times. The current infrastructure also had limited capabilities with running advanced allocation schemes making it dischemes making it difficult to do a proper what ifanalysis leading to poor decision quality.
What was the proposed solution?
Saturn with its team of experienced and certified Planning , Budgeting and Forecasting TM1 experts set up a Proof of Concept (POC) using IGNITE Framework conducting a set of analysis and design workshops involving key stakeholders in finance operations and technical teams to tackle theses issues.
IBM Cognos TM1 is enterprise planning software used to implement collaborative planning, budgeting and forecasting solutions, as well as analytical and reporting applications
Key changes in existing integration infrastructure was carried out in the POC set up to demonstrate faster interoperability with existing SAP environment. Design upgrades of ETL framework, eg., incorporating multiple jobs (insert, update, delete and bulk update jobs) instead of a single job on a standard target table load and upgrading of RAM for processing parallel jobs at lookup stage significantly reduced integration times to a couple of minutes from hours.
With Cognos TM1, in addition to standard interfaces, existing users got access to web interfaces and Cognos Analysis for Excel interfaces giving them full advantage of their skills on Microsoft Excel. Cognos TM1 Performance Design & Modeler provided budgeting professionals with a full array of model building tools and advanced allocation schemes, giving them the capability to import data and meta-data from multiple sources and map them to the model with simple drag and drop features.
